Foreign student unhappy with uni's response to attack claims 8:50 AM March 1
An international student at Newcastle University's central coast campus says he cannot understand why management is refusing to do anything about a racially motivated attack on him.
Shehbaz Singh says he and his cousin were assaulted by three men outside an Ourimbah restaurant last Thursday.
He says the matter is being investigated by Wyong police, but he says university management believes it is not its problem.
"The university or anyone else cannot say that because the incident did not happen on the campus, there is a duty of care of the educational institution towards the international students who pay a huge amount of fees to come to the university," he said.
"It definitely needs to be taken care of."
Mr Singh says he has also reported a similar incident which happened this week on the Ourimbah campus to management.
University vice-chancellor Nick Saunders has condemned the attacks and says management is working to stamp out what he has described as "unacceptable" behaviour.
"We've been in contact with the police about that, we've also been in contact with the student and we're taking as much action as we can to make sure these incidents don't occur," he said. Source: ABC
