Punter calls for selection consistency 7:29 AM March 1
Australian captain Ricky Ponting says he wants the selectors to maintain a settled line-up during the World Cup in the West Indies.
Former captain Ian Chappell agrees there has been too much tinkering with the one-day team lately, which has led to its current five-game losing streak.
Ponting said injuries to key players has been the main cause of disruption but was hoping for a more consistent approach to selection during the World Cup.
"You like to be playing what you think is your strongest 11 when those bigger games come around, and unfortunately we couldn't do that then and we probably couldn't do that with injuries and stuff in New Zealand as well," Ponting said.
"So we've got to sit down and decide with the conditions within the West Indies what our best 11 is going to be and I don't think there'll be too much tinkering through a World Cup campaign."
The skipper, named vice-captain to Steve Waugh in Australia's greatest ever one-day international side on Tuesday night, also said he was confident his side could overcome its injury setbacks during the early stages of the Cup.
Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden are still recovering from injuries, while Brett Lee has been ruled out of the entire tournament with an ankle injury.
Ponting said it was far from an ideal situation but believed other squad members would step up.
"I think we had a fairly similar scenario in the last World Cup with Michael Bevan being injured and Darren Lehmann I think being suspended for the first couple of games of," he said.
"We got those guys through okay and played some good cricket early on. So whichever team we go into the first game with it's up to those eleven players to put their hand up and get the job done." Source: ABC
